Tips for Replicating Evening Light Indoors on a Budget

Evening light can really step up the production value of a low budget film or short.

We can replicate this type of lighting even though we might be shooting in the morning indoors.

On a low budget we don’t want to try to emulate and emanate actual lights if we don’t have to.

Instead we can add a golden glow as if there is fading sunlight coming from a window in the scene.

3500K lighting is good for golden hour while evening light can be expanded up to 7500k lighting.

Key Takeaways:

  • Evening light is specifically defined by its signature color, intensity and by its specific direction.
  • Right before and after sunset or sunrise the sun is closest to the horizon.
  • This forces the sun to send light through the filtering effect of miles of dense atmosphere.

“The blue and violet frequencies scatter easiest in the atmosphere, leaving more red, yellow, and orange to pass through, which gives the light a beautiful, warm, golden glow.”
