This is a question I get quite a lot on this site and I see it appear over and over on user forums and other video editing discussion sites.
The bottom line is that the person feels that they have spent hours editing a video, got it looking crisp and sharp on their computer or phone, uploaded to YouTube or some other site and suddenly it looks soft, blocky, or washed out.
As I said, this is a common frustration for video creators at all levels but the good news is that it’s almost always fixable and once you understand why it happens, you can prevent it from happening again.
This is the key point that most of the problems I am going to lay out below (and their fixes) have as a starting point.
Every time a digital video file is compressed then re-compressed, to at least some degree there is a loss of quality.
That loss of quality at times may not even be visible but what has gone is some of the data from the previous iteration of that file or the files that were used to create it.
When you upload a video to YouTube, Instagram, TikTok or any other platform, the platform automatically re-encodes your video using its own compression settings.
This is not a “sometimes” or “usually” situation depending on this or that scenario!
It is a hard and fast rule that is applied automatically to every single video file they receive.
None of those platforms host the file you upload, they processes it, shrink it and serve their own version to viewers.
Understanding that basic rule of quality loss by compressing an already compressed video file can at least inform your existing workflow to keep that loss to a minimum.
In an ideal world your video files will be compressed three times:
If your original export was already heavily compressed or you used the wrong settings, the platform has less quality to work with and the result will look noticeably worse.
Think of it like a photocopy of a photocopy of a photocopy, the more generations you go through, the softer and blurrier it gets.
What it is: Bitrate is the amount of data used to display that video per second of video.
A higher bitrate means more detail is preserved. A low bitrate means the encoder has to throw away more information which can show up as blocky artifacts, smearing or a “muddy” look, especially in fast-moving scenes.
Why it matters on upload: When the platform re-encodes your video, it works from whatever you gave it.
A low-bitrate export gives the platform’s encoder less to work with and the final round of compression makes the problems much more visible.
The fix: Export at a higher bitrate than you think you need.
Here are general starting points:
Yes, this makes your export file larger but you’re uploading it, not storing it forever.
A larger, higher-quality source file gives the platform more to work with and results in a better-looking final video.
What it is: A codec is the method used to compress and store your video.
The most common ones you’ll encounter are H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and ProRes.
The problem: Some editing software defaults to codecs that aren’t ideal for platform uploads.
Highly compressed codecs like H.264 and H.265, while efficient for storage, can sometimes cause issues with certain platform encoders.
Of the two the H264 codec is less compressed and offers the platform encoders more data to work with when re-encoding.
The fix: For most platforms, H.264 is the safest and most widely recommended codec for export.
It’s well-supported everywhere and tends to survive re-compression the best.
Although YouTube also accepts H.265 and even ProRes (which gives the platform the most to work with), H.264 gives the balance between providing the platform enough data at a high bitrate to reliably work with without file size becoming a problem.
What it is: Color space defines the range of colors your video uses.
This one is a little unusual because at a consumer level it is probably a standard or setting you most likely have nothing to do with.
However in the interests of completeness we had better take a look at it anyway.
The two most relevant color spaces for creators are Rec.709 which is standard for most high definition video (1080p 4K etc.)) and Rec.2020 which is used for HDR (High Dynamic Range) content.
For you to be working with anything outside of Rec.709 you would have to have selected to record in a specific manner either in High Dynamic Range or a shooting profile like RAW or S-Log.
For the average person, if you have mostly accepted the default settings for you camera or phone and are shooting that way, you probably already in Rec.709.
The problem: If your editing software is set to an HDR or wide-gamut color space (like Slog or RAW) but you export for a platform that expects standard SDR Rec.709, your video can look washed out, faded, or oversaturated once uploaded.
The fix: Unless you are intentionally creating HDR content for a platform that supports it, export in Rec.709 color space with standard dynamic range.
When in doubt, Rec.709 SDR is the safe default.
What it is: Each platform has preferred resolutions and frame rates.
If you upload a video that doesn’t match those standards, the platform will scale or convert it, adding another processing step.
The problem: Uploading a 1440p video when the platform is optimized for 1080p or 4K, for example, forces an extra scaling step.
Similarly, non-standard frame rates can cause judder or conversion artifacts.
The fix: Stick to standard resolutions and frame rates:
Export at the resolution you actually edited in and don’t upscale a 1080p project to 4K hoping it will look better. It won’t, and it gives the encoder more work to do.
What it is: This one trips up a lot of new creators.
When you first upload a video to YouTube or any other social media platform, it doesn’t immediately serve the high definition or re-encoded version.
In general they start with a low-resolution version because that is going to be the fastest and easiest re-encoding job to get finished.
Gradually, when higher-quality versions become available as processing completes, the high resolution versions begin to become available and get served to viewers.
This can take anywhere from a few minutes to several hours for longer videos and is also dependent on how busy the platforms servers are at the time you uploaded.
The problem: Many creators watch their video immediately after uploading, see blurry or blocky quality and panic assuming something went wrong with their export.
Often, the video just hasn’t finished processing yet.
The fix: After uploading, wait at least 30 minutes to an hour before judging the quality, especially for longer videos.
In YouTube Studio, you can see the processing status.
Only evaluate quality once the highest resolution version (1080p or 4K) is available to select in the video player.
What it is: Even after your video has fully processed and is available in HD, YouTube doesn’t necessarily serve that HD version to every viewer.
YouTube uses a system called adaptive bitrate streaming (ABR) to automatically decide what quality to deliver to each person watching and that decision is made based on factors entirely outside your control.
How it works: YouTube constantly monitors each viewer’s connection speed, device type, screen resolution, and available bandwidth.
Based on those signals, it selects the most appropriate quality level to serve which might be 1080p on a fast desktop connection, but 480p or lower on a slow mobile connection or congested network.
The player can also shift quality mid-video if conditions change.
This means two people watching the exact same video can have completely different quality experiences and neither of those experiences necessarily reflects what you uploaded.
Why this matters for creators: If you watch your own video on your home computer right after uploading, you’ll likely see it in high quality.
But a viewer on a phone with a weak signal or someone in a region with slower internet infrastructure, may be seeing a much lower-quality version.
This is why you’ll sometimes get comments like “this looks blurry” on a video that looks perfectly sharp to you.
What you can do about it: You can’t control what quality YouTube serves to any given viewer because that’s determined by their device and connection.
But you can influence the ceiling.
When you upload a 4K video, YouTube creates more quality tiers to serve from, including higher ones.
This means that even viewers watching on 1080p screens often get a better-looking stream from a 4K source than from a 1080p source, because YouTube assigns a higher bitrate to the 1080p tier when a 4K version exists.
It’s one of the practical reasons many creators shoot or export in 4K even when their audience is primarily watching on 1080p screens.
The bottom line: If a viewer tells you your video looks blurry, it may have nothing to do with your export.
Their connection or device is likely the cause.
Your job is to upload the highest quality source file you reasonably can then after that, the platform takes over.
What it is: The container format is the file type that wraps your video and audio together with the most common being .mp4, .mov, and .mkv.
The problem: Some containers or audio codecs can cause platforms to stumble during processing, which occasionally results in quality or sync issues.
The fix: Export as .mp4 with AAC audio.
This is the most universally compatible combination across every major platform. Avoid exporting in .mkv or with uncompressed audio formats unless you have a specific reason to.

Your video looking bad after upload almost always comes down to one of the issues listed above and all of them are either preventable or simply worth understanding so you can stop blaming yourself!
The single biggest change most creators can make is simply exporting at a higher bitrate, that one adjustment alone will improve your upload quality noticeably.
Once you dial in your export settings, save them as a preset in your editing software so you never have to think about it again.
