The Friday Roundup – Fusion VFX and Softboxes

Intro to VFX for Short Films in Fusion – FULL COURSE – Resolve 19

OK so if you are familiar with DaVinci Resolve you would be aware that the Fusion Page of DaVinci is the visual effects module. If you were not aware of that… you are now!

The Fusion page is by far the most complex page of Resolve and because it is designed for full Hollywood level effects creation, it is also the most complex.

On top of that it has been designed to facilitate the workflows for fully pro effects creators so in a nutshell… it is a complicated beast!

Even if you only manage to learn a few tricks in Fusion you will be way ahead of the pack when it comes to effects.

One of the easiest and most effective ways of learning Fusion is by following along with a project being created by someone who also understands the difficulties newbies have with any new tool.

That brings us to Casey Faris and the video linked below.

It is a full step by step start to finish tutorial of designing and creating effects in Fusion.

The tutorail also comes with all the assets being used so you can download them and do it all yourself.

Well worth the price of admission!

Softbox vs Umbrella, Don’t Make This Rookie Mistake

Jay P Morgan is a photographer who occasionally delves into the world of video and although a little “off center,” knows his stuff.

I wanted to include this video for this week’s Roundup because he covers the subject of lighting in a studio setting.

The reason for that is that one would tend to think that once you have an area set up for shooting your videos indoors, things would tend to get easier.

The truth is that wherever you shoot there are going to be problems connected to that place no matter what.

Having a space for shooting is great but usually it doesn’t take you too long to work out that more often than not, you have a lighting problem. (We’ll leave the audio problems for another day!)

This almost always leads us to a decision on softboxes because they are pretty much the answer to this problem.

So the question is which softbox?

In the video below you will see various softboxes in action so what I think is important is to ignore the brands and pay attention to the effect each different one has on the overall scene and how it would apply to your situation.

How to Make YouTube Videos in 2024 with NO Experience

Probably the hardest part of getting started making videos for YouTube is… getting started!

Most of us have access to some kind of video creation device whether its a camera or phone or whatever.

So clearly that not the hard part.

The actual hard part is getting an idea for a video especially with the knowledge that to succeed on Youtube you are going to have to make more than one video!

Here are some ideas for not only getting started but also for continuing.

The video is from the guys at Movavi so of course there has to be a plug in there for that!

9 Tips on How to Edit YouTube Videos for Creators

Movavi youtube editing tips image.

Probably the difference between successful and unsuccessful video creators on YouTube is this.

The successful ones are addressing an absolute laundry list of details as part of the shooting and editing process.

The creation and editing of the video is only one part of the entire process and above all, the content will be viewer centric.

It won’t be created to soothe the algorithm or try to game the system in any way.

Sure things like that will be taken into consideration but not at the expense of the content or the viewer.

How to Apply Special Effects to Part of a Title in PowerDirector

OK so I have probably mentioned before that of all the consumer level video editors around, PowerDirector has the most advanced titling module of them all.

Honestly the knobs and dials and switches and settings in there seems to be endless!

What that adds up to is total control over you titles BUT! You have to know what you are doing!

Here’s an example.

5 Easy Tips for Better Videos

Ton Antos is a video maker I have followed for many years now and he really is a great source of information especially when you want to get the real info rather than the “some guy on YouTube” info!

In this video he covers a few excellent tips for lifting the standard of you videos to the next level.

Updates from the 2025 ‘Made on YouTube’ Event

Recently there was a rather large event put on by YouTube called the “Made on YouTube” event.

Traditionally this event is an annual get together for major YouTube creators and the bosses to lay out the current state of the platform, progress on what has been released since the last one and what is scheduled to come.

Very often these types of events tend to illicit either a “we are all doomed” response or a “greatest thing since sliced bread” one!

I usually don’t get into either of those extremes and generally wait until a couple of my “go to” guys give a roundup of what was announced. So here it is!

How to Make Your Voice Sound Like a Robot in Audacity

There are a bunch of effect available to you when you use Audacity and given the fact that it’s free, why not take a look!

Anyway in the video below you can see Mike going through some of those tools and the settings within them to get some strange sounding vocals.
