The Friday Roundup – It’s an NAB Wasteland Around Here

OK right from the outset this week let’s get totally real.

The whole reason I can managed to scrape together a blog post each week is definitely NOT because I am a gifted blogger or natural writer!

It’s because I can scrape together a bunch of what I believe to be relevant content from other places around the internet, cobble them together and make it all look like I am a screaming genius.

The truth is I totally rely on other sources for both interesting content and inspiration.

Unfortunately there are certain events in the world that can have a detrimental effect on my “genius” appearance and one of the big ones is NAB.

NAB is the annual National Association of Broadcasters convention which, in their own words is:

” the world’s largest event covering filmed entertainment and the development, management and delivery of content across all mediums. From creation to consumption, across multiple platforms and countless nationalities, the NAB Show is the home to the solutions that transcend traditional broadcasting and embrace content delivery to new screens in new ways.”

So what does that have to do with this blog?

Well during NAB just about everyone in the video space in any form goes to Vegas and theoretically engages in Convention type behavior for a week so in the meantime no one is really doing anything except reporting from NAB.

Given that NAB is directed right at the top end of the market, us “little folk” don’t really get to see much from it in terms of how we are shooting, editing and distributing our videos.

What happens at NAB tends to roll out to the consumer end at a much later date if at all.

So instead of boring you to death with a blog post that is essentially about nothing I have decided to give you all the rest of the week off and will see you here next week… you are welcome.

DIY Monopod

These days most of us are shooting in at east some form of high definition format.

The beauty of that is of course sharp crystal clear images with which you can astound your friends and family.

The downside of course is that every little shake, shudder or jerky movement seems to get magnified beyond belief.

Add to that the need to keep things smooth for the sake of the high compression used by your device and things aren’t quite so rosy anymore!

One very convenient method of getting steadiness into your shooting is by the use of some kind of support. It can be wall to lean on, a $1000 fluid head tripod all the way through to $10,000 worth of steadicam! OK $10,000 is totally out of my league so maybe try this:

The Dreaded Green Screen of Death

Sometimes the automatic handy dandy Adobe Flash updater does work out to be quite so handy dandy!

The update may fail or get left incomplete or sometimes the update itself is a dog.
