Do You Need to Know Lighting Patterns
If you are shooting videos in a relatively controlled environment then you know that one of the key elements of this is getting the lighting right.
For outside or general “run and gun” shooting it’s a matter of selecting “auto” and firing away!
However once you take things indoors a whole range of lighting problems will crop up.
Backgrounds too bright, backgrounds too dark, subject overlit, subject underlight, weird shadows, no shadows… the list goes on and on.
The video below is a bit of a deep dive into different styles of lighting, how they are achieved and under what circumstances you might choose them.
This is by no means a complete guide to lighting but a pretty good place to start.
My advice on this is to check out videos like this one and take the ideas onboard.
Then get yourself setup and repeatedly execute those ideas while observing the results and continue to practice until it gets easier… trust me! It will get easier!
AI Video Editing – Top 5 Tools We Recommend in 2024
Obviously at the moment the world of A.I. for video is growing daily with all sorts of tools and services coming online.
I track with this subject pretty closely on a weekly basis and the usual routine is this: I find out about the new thingy or feature, I check it out and think oooh! That’s way cool!
I play with it a little then think to myself, “How or why would I actually use this?”
I then realize I would not and move along as if nothing had happened!
That’s the reality of things at this point in time.
Of the hundreds of A.I. tools around I regularly use about two os here’s a rundown of some of the ones you may find useful.
Filmora 14 Getting Started Guide for Beginners: Learn The Start Page and UI
Since the release of Filmora 14 there have been a few little changes to the user interface that for existing users might catch them out.
Nothing too crazy here but it’s worth taking a look.
If you are new to Filmora then this is a great introduction to the interface to get you started.
3 Features to Improve Portrait and Object Processing With Filmora 14
This is a run through of some of the A.I. features that were either updated or added with the release of Filmora 14.
One in particular for me has become a tool I use over and over.
I have a client that likes to shoot three quarter (basically from the knees up) in her informational videos.
They are basically presentations or lectures.
That’s fine but what it does do is introduce complication into the lighting of the scene so that her preferred background is lit well.
Exposing for her face AND the background takes quite a balancing act as far as lights go!
With the background remover in Filmora this has become so much simpler!
I captured a stock image of her presentation area in which the lighting is perfect and she is not present.
Then when I shoot, I only adjust the exposure for her and not the background just making sure there is good separation between her and that background.
Then in Filmora I remove the background using the A.I. tool and replace it with my stock image! Easy peasy!
Reveal Title Text Using a Moving Logo in PowerDirector
This is a straightforward titling effect that is easy to use and looks pretty good.
Essentially it is an exercise in using titles, graphic objects, a little keyframing and masking as well as working with tracks.
Vloggers Mistakes – How to Make a Vlog the Right Way
The title of this video refers to “vlogging” but in reality the tips apply to videos in general.
For example the first mistake they talk about is lack of structure.
This actually refers to one of the basic rules of both video and movies in that there has to be at least some kind of story present to engage the viewer.
Humans have, do and probably always will respond to stories.
Even if you are making a video on digging a new vegetable patch ready for planting there actually is a story there!
It may not be a plot that will set the world on fire with action and excitement but if the subject is related to the audience with at least the elements of a story, you will retain attention.
Fusion Tutorial With Particle Effects In DaVinci Resolve 19
This is a cool little effect you can learn to pull off yourself and along the way maybe get a little better at using the Fusion Page!
Once you check out the video below you will notice that creating the actual effect is pretty simple.
Unfortunately the thing that makes it SEEM complicated is the Fusion Page which is a little tricky to wrap your head around.
I think the main reason for that is that we all go into the Fusion Page with an “editing” mindset and an expectation of things to be working like in editing.
The reality is that the Fusion Page is not an “editing” module and because of that the design is way different.
Choppy Audio Effect? Check this Quick Fix
Sometimes when you are working in Resolve you may find that the effects you are applying are causing your playback to become slow or choppy.
This can especially become a problem when the effects you are using are being applied “on the fly” in real time as is the case with some of the audio corrections.
There is actually a pretty cool workaround for this that is fast and easy to use and the best part is that you can revert to the original any time you want. Check it out!
