The Friday Roundup – Lighting Tips and YouTube Subscriber Love

Video Lights Image

Welcome to this week’s Friday Roundup! Let’s kick off this week with a little advice on how to attract the YouTube Subscriber’s Love!

Care and Feeding of Subscribers on YouTube

One important aspect of building an audience for your videos on YouTube is the gathering of subscribers.

By getting subscribers you gain authority in the eyes of the internal search functions of YouTube which in turn will result in your projects being presented to more people.

This can set in motion a kind of “snowball” effects whereby you can begin to steadily increase your viewership.

However inside all of this it has to remain uppermost in your mind that YouTube is actually a “social” network, not just a place to watch and upload videos.

The key concept here is “social!” Replying to comments and generally interacting with your audience (subscribers) can go a long way in gathering even more.

Once people begin to realize there is a real person at the other end of the communication they will find your projects more appealing and will be more likely to both view and share your work.

One great way of engaging with your subscribers outside of the general “commenting / messaging” system within YouTube is to let them know what is going on and when you have new things available.

The article below covers this activity very well and although directed squarely at a more commercial type of YouTube presence the principles are universal.

How the Pros Do It

If you have ever sat in front of the computer grinding out the process of editing your footage into some kind of recognizable form… and thought the process was long, boring and bordering on painful… you are right!

That’s editing!

Take a look at the process from a commercial point of view on a big budget movie, maybe it will make you feel better!

Lighting for Video Tutorials

Premiumbeat.com is a site that offers various product in the form of video clips and music clips for video projects. However on their Vimeo site they have a range of tutorials on basic video creation so I though I would start posting a few here, especially some of the one that I think are relevant to the readers of this site.

Lighting Masterclass

OK, we may all be aware of the importance of lighting in our videos but the truth is that most of us are just shooting on the fly most of the time.

The idea of setting up lighting for a shoot involving 20 six year olds full of sugar at a party is probably a little unrealistic!

Having said that I always find it fascinating to go behind the scenes with a real pro to see what they are doing and how they are doing it.

In the article below, if you are interested, don’t sweat the details! Just try to find the little nuggets of understanding!

8K Resolution? Really?

Oh God! Now that the consumer level of camcorders and video recording devices have begun adding 4K resolution as “the next big thing” I find this!

Probably not anything to worry about at this point of the game but I am sure a bunch of developers at a bunch of software companies see article like this and think, “here we go again!”
