Interview Lighting

Still shot from an interview setup.

A key lighting technique for any aspiring video maker is the interview setup.

You don’t need to break the bank to get it right and with a few tips you can master this vital skill.

The first step is to look at the space you are shooting in and work out the best positioning for the subject and camera.

Which spot will make best use of the existing features such as leading lines and backgrounds.

Once you have the camera and subject set up then you need to address framing and composition.

Finally we come to adding any necessary lighting to the shoot that will serve to enhance the existing lighting scenario.

Key Takeaways:

  • Keep in mind that different interviews will be different for every project.
  • The topics, subjects, and locations will determine the look of the setup and the way you light it.
  • There are a few go-to techniques that will make your interviews look great no matter what the situation is.

“The best filmmakers know how to get great images as quickly as possible, and having a few tricks in your back pocket will go a long way on your next shoot.”
